There are a surprising number of skills that are needed to run any number of businesses. Many hi-tech entrepreneurs believe that all they need to do is develop an application or a software product of some kind and then sit back to watch the money role in. This could not be further from the truth!

It is true that entrepreneurs need the basic skills of their business, usually in the technical IT area for an internet related business, however there are many other skill sets they over look until it is too late. They tend to have a strong belief in their products or services and that the customers will migrate to them, avoid the competition and drive their businesses into the stratosphere.

Whether you are a small one person company or a growing startup or a company that is on the cusp of the exponential growth curve, small business owners and entrepreneurs need to pay attention to the following areas.

Money management is always a key element to success. In fact the most critical is actually managing cash flow. You may have lots of potential and pent up demand, however if you do not have sufficient cash to pay for raw materials, your suppliers will quickly shut you down.

Marketing your product or services is also extremely important. Developing the marketing story board, answering succinctly why your potential customers should purchase from you and creating customer testimonials are just a few of the tools that your sales people are going to need if they are hoping to turn leads into sales.

Sales of course depend on getting in front of the customer. Communications, ability to tell your story, closing sales with the customer are very important if not crucial. Whether you are doing this face to face or over the Internet, if you do not have a compelling reason for your customer to buy from you, then your sales will suffer.

Customer service and support are the reason that customers will keep coming back to you. Excellent customer support for sales, fulfillment, and customer disputes will ensure that you have a satisfied customer and will be the reason that customers continue to support you and tell others about you. Entrepreneurs, especially IT and technical people often overlook this area since they forget that their customers may not be as savvy as they are in this field.

Developing great ideas into something you can sell is the first step to a successful home business. Paying attention to these areas discussed in this article is the second major step to developing a successful Internet home business.

Based on our skills what home business can we start?
My husband and I cannot really be apart from each other (met in high school, spent every day together for the past 8 years). Now we are expecting a little child, and we want to start a home-based business so that we can be together and help each other with business and child rearing.

Here are my skills: I speak 2 languages (Russian and Spanish), I am a graduate student (nonprofit management and public policy), I’ve worked in the office environment prior to my pregnancy, I am a certified advanced tutor, worked in retail industry for many years (know ins and outs).

My husband: Part-time EMT, Micro-Biology Major ( has one semester to graduate), he is a self-taught investor, accordion player, renovates cars for leisure, has good people skills and many connections in medical world.

We do not want to get involved with the internet scams. We want to start something legitimate. We are looking for "service" opportunities. My husband unfortunately does not want to sell.
We are not afraid to work

So far I thought of consulting assistants, assistance for elderly and disabled, translation services (my husband also speaks German), travel agency based at home, tutoring services.

When I read your question, the first thing that popped into my mind was foreign language tutoring. The tutoring I am thinking about is online, one on one tutoring through a webcam. Many people want to learn new language but do not have time to go to class. Since you are certified, you can definitely do something like this. Also, it will not take too much capital to start either.

As for your husband, since he has many connections in medical world (very very good thing) and he does not want to go into sales (too bad). I am thinking that he can be a great medical consultant. There are tons of companies that are looking to break into medical industry. He can use his connection to show the business how to get inside, if their product will work in that industry, etc.

Good luck and please let us know how it works out in the end. You can email me through my profile.

There are many businesses out there that tell you that you can operate from your home and make lots of money, however, most of the time, this is not the case. I have tried a few of them unsuccessfully until finally, (after much frustration & research) I found out about a web-based business that really promises what they say. You can check out them out at http://www.lucrativebiz.ws. I wasn’t successfull with the other web-based business because they hide the fact that you had to actually purchase tons of products, store them at home, log them around (because you don’t want to start charging for shipping too) & make presentations, in order to try to move the costly products. This website is totally self-explanatory and tells you exactly what to expect & investment involved, if you choose to move forward. Hope this site works for you, if not, good luck finding something else that does!

with your and your husbands skills and talents, why not start a day care center in your home… that way both of you could be together at home, with your baby. you might have to make slight child proof changes. i would research this idea, and after you have your baby and recovered [to the point you can operate this service.] or you could start it now and plan to have a replacement for a short time before and after the baby comes . congrats to new mom and dad
