I have recently started a home based cake business, but can’t seen be getting those all important orders?
I have printed biz cards and handed out, I have a portfolio which I show to prospective clients, etc, Because I have just started, I know it’s to be expected, that sales will be slow, but just as a matter of forward thinking, what more can I do. and yes I do make great cakes, even if i say so myself! it’s been my hobby for some time now. your advice will be much appreciated.
Get some knowledge on marketing. Learn why people buy from certain people. How customer turn into lifetime customer. Why business fail. Do you know 40% of small biz fail in the first year alone and in 5 years another 40% fail.
This statistic is just trying to let us that know that ordinary biz will not last. You need to stand out among the crowd to succeed. So start learning how to succeed or otherwise your biz will just be one of the statistic.
Entrepreneur has to be creative, unique and resilient. They never stop from learning new things. The world changes everyday and so do successful entrepreneur. You can too so let success be yours too. All the best.

If you really want your business to take off, I would purchase a booth at bridal shows.

Call a reporter for the local newspaper and see if she will interview you. If that works, offer to go on the tv morning show at 6am. Bring cakes.

Make an online portfolio. Post flyers with images of your work. Use word of mouth. Research other decorators and see what they are doing for advertising. Give some sort of discount or treat to first time customers. Make a t-shirt with an image of your work and wear it in public. Etc. You can do alot to bring in business.
